the nines

July 21, 2010 in conference with 8 Comments

Maybe you’ve heard about the controversy surrounding the way people could vote for the speakers at THE NINES. It allowed people to view hundreds of Christian leaders on a “twitter poll” page and either “like” or “dislike” a person. I’m guessing that the people with the highest number of “likes” gets to speak at the conference. I believe this is a great idea because it allows the audience to get involved by selecting who they want to hear at THE NINES. There’s nothing wrong with that, right? But, as Skye Jethani, the managing editor of Leadership Journal points out,

“it a poorly communicated idea that has deteriorated into a popularity contest among church leaders.”

What are your thoughts on the “twitter poll” idea? Do you believe other conferences should adopt this idea as well or do you see where Skye Jethani has a point on this matter?

I mean, let's be honest, isn't most (if not all) of the Christian Leadership stuff a popularity contest?

LOL, on a side note, just saw that Skye Jethani is #78…maybe that's why he thinks it's a bad idea. LOL!

I think it is the same thing people do on digg.com everyday, just with speakers.
The only thing that bothered me was that it was the typical people at the top. I guess that is who people want to hear though.

I think that's because going to the conferences is much easier than reading everyone's book. LOL! Maybe more expensive. :)

I don't have a problem with voting on the speakers per se, but my concern would be that if all conferences went this route, there would never be an opportunity to hear from lesser known, but equally as qualified/anointed/gifted presenters. The popularity contest aspect would potentially leave us with the same speakers all the time.

Even without the voting it's a popularity contest. The same speakers every year, talking about their recent book. Blah, blah, blah. I think the all the lesser known speakers will rarely make the list for the conferences because conferences cost money and so you need to enlist speakers that people know. Sad. I think the whole conference thing is pretty silly.
