top 10 top posts of 2010

2010 was a big year all around, folks. Some big things happened here on jackalopekid.com. I’m two years into this blogging thing and this is my 332nd post. Beautiful. I just want to say thanks to you folks that come back day after day to read and comment on the junk I have to say. (more…)

favorite albums of 2010

December 24, 2010 in 14 Comments

2010 was a huge year for music. It had some awesome music and it had some letdowns along the way. For me, the biggest letdown of the year was Brooke Fraser’s album Flags by the way. She usually out does herself, but this time it just didn’t work for me.

Keep in mind as you see my favorites of the year, that I rated entire albums, not individual songs.

Here are my favorite albums of 2010:

1. Kings of Leon – Come Around Sundown // this did it for me because they took a risk and went with something totally different and it was amazing. They mixed the sound that they had in the beginning with their last album and it ended up working. It was actually so different that it took a few listens to grow on me, but ended up being my favorite album of the year. Not by much though…

2. Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy // This is my second favorite album of the year. Kanye is used to pushing the limits, but really pushed it here. There’s nothing like it out there and that’s what I appreciate. I can bet you there are a lot of folks that don’t like this one though. I mean it’s Kanye, folks.

3.Trip Lee – Between Two Worlds // Yes Trip, you are above Lecrae in my books this year. And no, this isn’t just in the “Christian Rap” genre. He knocked it out of the park whether you’re talking Trip or Jay-Z. Don’t even bother arguing on this one.

4. Mumford & Sons – Sigh No More // A truly amazing, inspiring, listen to over and over kind of album. They take that easy, but catchy music and gives it great lyrics to back it up. Looking forward to hearing what’s next for this band.

5. Kid Cudi – Man On The Man II // Here’s another innovative guy that even Kanye has said is his favorite artist out there. He brings it every time, folks.

6. Eminem – Recovery // Here’s a guy that I usually can’t stand, but I can’t ignore the lyrics and beats this time around…when there are actually enough to make out. Yes, I listen to edited. Anyways, this project is his best ever and it inspires to create better music.

7. Jesus Culture – Come Away // With “Come Away” they did what they always do. They brought great music, with great lyrics, with great emotion and made a connection with the audience. You really can’t ask for much more. They might have been higher up on this list if Kim Walker would have had more solos on the album and would’ve wowed me. It was a little less amazing  for me than “Consumed” and it almost felt like a step backwards.

8. Bruno Mars – Doo-Wops & Hooligans // Bruno brings those huge songs that top the charts and he brings good songs to accompany them. It’s hard to find a good album throughout, but he pulled it off besides one “filler” song that you could tell was one of those last minute add ons. I’ll let you figure what that one is.

9. Lecrae – Rehab // Lecrae’s newest album is among the best I’ve heard this year, but there was one fault I found with it. It had two “filler” songs. Other than that, the album was solid. The other songs definitely hit hard.

It’s definitely a mixture of artists and genres, but this is the music that did it for me this year. I’m pretty sure I heard everything this year. Every album I’ve listed does have something in common, though. They inspired me in some way. Hopefully you’ve heard them sometime this year or are purchasing them in the near future.

So, that’s 9 albums…

What album would you add to this list and make #10? What albums do you agree with? What album(s) would you take off of this list?

second coming

December 6, 2010 in 6 Comments

The Lord’s second coming has been talked about forever now. It blows my mind even more that it’s mentioned in the Bible that His coming would be soon. (Revelation 3:11 & 22:12,20-21)

I remember thinking when I was a kid that Jesus would definitely come back before 2010, and here it is about to be over with a new year just around the corner.

As a kid I wanted to do five things before going to heaven…

graduate from college
be a millionaire
get married
have sex
be a dad

Those third, fourth and fifth things all go together if you play your cards right.

I don’t know if anyone else has ever felt like it would never happen because it has been talked about for so long and nothing has happened, but I have.

I needed a reminder that this is a promise and not some fairy tale.

Some people are too tied up in things here on this earth.

I’m tired of waiting. He needs to come soon. This earth is cool and all, but I’d take Heaven any day.

biggest event of the decade

800px WTC smoking on 9 11 biggest event of the decade

I know, I know. 2010 isn’t quite over yet, but it’s close. It’s hard to believe that this decade is almost over.

As I think about this last decade, my mind goes to two events. 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. Of course this is because those are two events that happened on American soil. The photos really depicted a hurting, confused and frustrated nation. Although these are terrible events, there were tons of other terrible things that happened in the last ten years. Such as the financial crisis, war in Iraq, the Indian Ocean tsunami and Michael Jackson’s death. That last one doesn’t really go with the other things listed, but I’m leaving it.

There were also a lot of great things that happened as well. It’s always seems harder to name the good things that happened, but here are some of those:

Lance Armstrong won his seventh Tour de France.
Electronics became even thinner.
YOUTUBE
100 million iPods sold
twitter

The list really could go on for a while.

Now, I won’t mention presidents because some of you would put Obama in your good column. And some of you would put Bush in your good column.

For us personally the biggest events were getting married, finding out that we were pregnant and moving to Colorado. The last ten years were huge!

Anyways,
What was your big event of the decade? Good or bad.

What We Need to Do

April 26, 2010 in 9 Comments

I really need to do what I need to do. I am talking about the goals that I have. These are huge goals, folks! I need to keep the date night with Jasmine no matter what comes up, I need to sell my house back in Georgia, I need to payoff some school debt that I have, I need to workout hard each and everyday to climb the 10 peaks that I want to this year, I need to eat right each and everyday and the list goes on and on. I feel like being lazy sometimes and this just isn’t going to cut it. I’m sure you have goals, too. These are goals that we need to train for, commit parts of our lives to and actually live like nobody else to reach these big goals. So, here’s my challenge to all of us on this beautiful, Monday morning, in April. Do not forget the commitments you’ve made. Don’t forget the goals you have written down or thought of. Do not forget your new years’ resolutions. We can do this.

So, what are some huge goals you have set for 2010?

w no food fast

Well, this blog post isn’t about “fast” in the sense of doing something quickly. It’s that other one that scares me a little bit. It’s the one that means me giving up something that will help me spiritually, help me focus on what God is saying, (more…)
