Legacy!

April 7, 2010 in Guest Blog Post with 1 Comment

Here is a guest post from Trousey, @trousey on twitter.

Take a second to look back at your life…

Think about relationships, friendships and even time spent with people
you hardly know.
No matter how much time we’ve spent with someone we have to realize
that our lives have left an impression/legacy on the people who are
around us! In some situations that can be an awesome thing but in
others it can be a horrible one.
No matter who you’ve hung out with your time has done one or two
things for that person.
You have either encouraged them and challenged them to draw closer to God…
Or have destroyed, discouraged and been one of the people Ghandi was
talking about when he said “I like your Christ, I do not like your
Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”
The time we spend with people can leave a memory with them that will
last a lifetime!
There was a man in the Bible that carried a legacy that was the most
desirable legacy you could ever have! His name was Barnabas, and his
name was mentioned only 3 times in scripture…
First when the church leaders were hesitant to let Paul into the
church and it was Barnabas that “vouched” for Paul… And because of
this we have the New Testament!
Second, when John Mark messed up on the missionary journey with Paul
and it was Barnabas that restored him and let him come back!
Third, when there were people in need… Barnabas sold everything he
owned and gave it to the poor.
This is what was said of Barnabas…”He was a kind man, he was a just
man, and MANY WERE WON UNTO the KINGDOM because of HIM!”
When Barnabas was laid to rest I could just hear the people at his
funeral saying “He came, he saw and he LOVED!!
Only soon will this day be passed, only what is done for Jesus will last!
Let your legacy be that of someone who has lived for other people,
served the needy, and spread the gospel!
Then you will have a true Legacy!

Wow. This pairs up well with Tam's post on her fear. Of dying. Something she commented back to my comment with something I found profound. It is something her MIL shared with her after watching Susan Sarandon's character die in "StepMom". "when God says its time for you to go home, then your job here is done. there is not one more thing you were to do. period. your mission will be complete.”

I think that will stick with me for a long time (and I have trouble with remembering these things). I think part of the fear of dying is what have I really done in my life that matters. What is my legacy? What do people think of me? Of what I did with my life.

In active addiction, I didn't care. About anything. How I acted. What chaos I created. I fumbled through when it came to my daughter being in high school. I missed a lot. It was all about the pill count. Nothing else.

Then came recovery & a reconnection with God. And all the spiritual principles that used to make my life so complete. Now they are doing that again. If I had to go through active addiction & recovery in order to leave a legacy, then it has been a blessing. God never left me! That thought just blows my mind. I want to not only pass on the treasure of recovery, but of the God that brought me through these past 1002 days CLEAN!! It shows in the way I live life today. With compassion. With honesty. With faith. I have touched others' lives. This is so fulfilling! Not in a prideful way, but a grateful way.
