Is it ever ok to lie?

I can remember as a kid I would fib a lot. I would lie about silly things. They were things that didn’t matter at all. Even as I got older I would stretch the truth to make myself look better, feel less embarrassed about things, make the story shorter so I didn’t have to go into deeper details and I would try to dodge things that I didn’t necessarily want to talk about. Looking back on it, I’m wondering if there is ever a situation that lying is ok.

Yes but in rare cases like Rahab's or Corrie ten Boom's stories. Might be ok when it's a matter of life and death or obedience and disobedience to God's explicit laws.

If I am hiding in your closet and a person comes to the door with a gun asking if I am there – I think lying would be okay! Even called for. Other than that – no. Don't tell people they look great in clothes that make them look horrible. Nicely suggest something else. If your spouse, significant other asks you point blank if you had an affair – fess up and deal with the consequences. An affair is one transgression – lying merely compounds it. That is my two cents.

I would say technically according to the letter of the law no, lying is wrong all the time. But I've lied to protect my husband, I would lie to protect my children. But also would our lying be placing our trust in ourselves & not God to protect? It might seem to be a fine line. Look at Rahab, she lied to the guards in Jericho about the Israelites, but then Abraham lied TWICE about Sarah being his sister to protect her (and himself) and both times it got him in a world of hurt.

Ditto to everything that all others have said. Also, we need to have a relationship to say the difficult things – to speak a difficult truth. So, yes, the truth is always best, but follow the Word's instruction about stating the truth in love. (Defined as stating the difficult should not be easy for the person saying it. We need to feel and convey compassion, empathy and respect for that person, and do so without condescending, since we ourselves might be in the same situation down the road.) As a result, I have asked family and close friends to always tell me the truth, but to leave me standing in the doing, so that I am left with the strength to correct or complete whatever is needed, and I try to do the same for them as well. (Please note that I have addressed close relationships here. Regarding those not close, I have generally evaded the issue, hoping they will ask someone they are closer to, so that a difficult truth can be cushioned by the knowledge they are cared for.)

I don't think it's right, but here's the deal. David was a master liar (you know, the King who wrote some Psalms) and he won some huge battles by being deceptive. He also lost a child that way, killing Bathsheba's husband.
