February 8, 2010 in social media week with 4 Comments

Here’s the second post of social media week for ya. This is probably the most important twitter rule of them all and it’s actually the easiest one. But again, this takes time as well. Here it is and it’s gonna be amazing:

If you’re nobody, you have to follow other people for them to know who you are.

Yep, folks. I know. That was probably the most amazing thing you have ever heard. Think about it for a second though. If you’re not famous, the only way that someone out there is going to know about you is by following that person or replying to them first. The only way to DM a person is for them to follow you back, so if you follow a person you’re doing half of the DM part. On follows there is a 17-37% follow back rate. Also, you can follow up to 1,000 people per day until you reach yourself following 2,000 people. When you reach 2,000 followers you can add more that you will be following. Make sense? So, the key is to get to 2,000 followers. How do you do that? Well, following people, but also having conversation with people. The easiest way to do that is to find people who have the same interests as you. And the easiest way to do that is to follow the people that your favorite tweeps follow. The best one for me is Rick Warren. He has a Christian person honor roll over there he’s following. So, naturally what did I do? I followed everyone he’s following. I’ve made some awesome relationships out of it, too. And again, the only way they would have ever found out about little old me is for me to start that relationship first. After reaching 15,000-20,000 followers I didn’t have to do this anymore, but if you’re first starting off, it’s the best and fastest way to start relationships with people who share the same interests. Easy enough, right?

You are absolutely right, and follow people not only in your niche but other subjects. Makes good social networking.

Great advice. I too, have made some wonderful relationships on FB & Twitter. Thanks Adam!

Yeah, this is where I get twitter all wrong. I don't actively pursue following others much. I'm going to experiment with this over the next couple of days, and see how it goes.

Thanks for sharing the tips. They're the classic encouragement type. It's not like this info is that insanely complex – it's that I need someone to tell me to get out there and do it. :>)

    So thank you.
