the watch
Four years ago, when I still lived in Georgia, I flew out to visit my friend, Chris. He lived in Colorado Springs, CO at the time. After a couple of days of being in Colorado, we decided to go out on the town one Friday evening. While I was getting ready for this spectacular occasion, I noticed his new Rolex watch and really wanted to try it on. Being the trusting friend that he is, Chris said I could wear it out if I wanted to. When I tried the watch on I noticed it was snug on the wrist, but I really didn’t care. My love for this Rolex overtook the slightly snug feeling around my wrist, so I decided to wear it out anyways. As we were headed into our first stop for the evening, I decided to get a little crazy. I don’t know why I did this following trick, but hindsight is always 20/20 for me. As we were walking into the store I pushed off this brick wall and twirled around. As I did the motion to twirl around, I felt the Rolex watch fly off my wrist, hit the brick wall and then came crashing down to the concrete sidewalk below us. This whole event happened in slow motion, folks. All I could do is stare in amazement with my mouth wide open. The watch was broken beyond repair. After fully realizing what had happened, all I could say was that I was sorry. After that, I made the promise to Chris that I would someday buy him a new Rolex when I have a ton of extra money. At the time I didn’t really know if I could ever raise enough money to actually buy him another watch, but it seemed like the right thing to do. I still haven’t replaced the watch, but plan on it at some point in the next fifty years or so. I learned a very valuable lesson that day. I will never borrow anything from someone that costs that much money again. I try to laugh about this story now.
